RTP–IST Panel–TG-007

Visualizing Massive Military Datasets

Programme of Work

June 18, 1999

There are two projects:

  1. To conduct a workshop on Information Visualisation and Knowledge Extraction, the results of which help to guide the subsequent work of the group.
  2. To develop a demonstration prototype platform and support structures for the visualisation of multimedia datasets.

Specific Approaches

1. The following Approaches have been identified:

Project 1

Task 1:

Conduct workshop, Information Visualization and Knowledge-Extraction, set for Canada, June 2000.

Project 2

Task 2:

Produce a prototype demonstration platform based on the principles and recommendations contained in the report of TG002.

Task 3

Prepare and deliver annual reports to IST Panel, RTP.

Task 4

Prepare and deliver final report [as last annual report] to IST Panel, RTP.

Approaches

Continue support for the N/X. will in turn deliver annual meetings, proceedings in paper and on the Website.

Maintain and develop Web sites for:

    1. Publicly accessible information relating to the Web of the N/X and the TG.
    2. Material useful to collaborative work within the N/X accessible only to N/X members
    3. Material useful to collaborative work within the TG, accessible only to TG members.

One or more of these web sites will include both final and ‘living document’ versions of all reports and proceedings of the TG and the N/X, in enhanced form.

Investigate current research on presentation and interaction techniques for pictorial and textual material, and coordinate collaborative development of these engines in a specific data environment. This work must be coordinated with studies of search engines appropriate to the presentation and interaction techniques selected.

Investigate the issues relating to presentation and interaction of search engines for dynamic multimedia datasets, this will form a basis for longer term collaborative research targeted at such areas as training, simulation, battlefield command and intelligence analysis. Attempt to define interface standards between search engines and visualisation applications.

(continuous, occasional)

Prepare and deliver survey papers concerning the needs and possibilities for knowledge extraction and discovery from data of all kinds.

Schedule

Semi-annual meetings supported by Internet communication including the use of TG007 Website. The TG will invite the N/X to coordinate its annual workshop in conjunction with the Spring meeting of the TG.
